Because they rebelled against the words of God: and contemned the counsell of the most high: Psalms 107:11 (KJV)

Psalm 107 is a psalm of thanksgiving that celebrates God’s deliverance and redemption of His people. It begins with an exhortation to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and mercy. Throughout the psalm, different situations and scenarios are presented where people find themselves in distress, and God rescues them when they cry out to Him.

In verse 11, the psalmist describes a particular group of people who rebelled against the words of God and contemned the counsel of the most High. The verse highlights the consequences of their actions and sets the stage for the subsequent verses that describe their plight and eventual deliverance. From a broader biblical context, this verse resonates with the theme of rebellion against God’s commands and the subsequent consequences.

Rebellion against God’s Words: the verse emphasizes that the people in question rebelled against the words of God. Throughout the Bible, God communicates His will and desires to His people through His Word, which includes His commandments, statutes, and teachings that provide guidance for righteous living. Rebelling against God’s Word implies willful disobedience and a rejection of His authority.

Contemning the Counsel of the Most High: the counsel of God refers to His wisdom and guidance, which He imparts through various means, including His Word, the Holy Spirit, and godly advisors. Contemning God’s counsel demonstrates a lack of respect for His wisdom and an unwillingness to seek His guidance.

Consequences of Rebellion: the verse implies that rebellion against God’s words and contemning His counsel have negative consequences. While the immediate context of Psalm 107 describes the distress and suffering the rebellious people experience, the broader biblical narrative shows that rebellion against God leads to spiritual, emotional, and sometimes physical consequences.

The Offer of Redemption: Psalm 107 as a whole highlights God’s redeeming and delivering power. The psalm emphasizes that even in the midst of rebellion, when people cry out to God in their distress, He hears and rescues them.
