Psalms 108:10

Listen to this article

“Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?”

Context:Understanding the background and context of a verse is important for interpretation. Psalm 108 is attributed to David and is a combination of verses from two earlier psalms (Psalm 57:7-11 and Psalm 60:5-12). It is a prayer for victory and deliverance from enemies. In verse 10, David expresses a desire for guidance and help to overcome obstacles.

Symbolism of the strong city and Edom:In this verse, the strong city and Edom can be seen as symbolic representations. The strong city may refer to a fortified place or stronghold, which could represent any kind of difficult situation or obstacle in life. Edom, on the other hand, refers to a nation and its people who were traditionally adversaries of Israel. Edom symbolises the enemies or challenges that David faced.

Seeking God’s guidance:David acknowledges his need for divine guidance. He recognises that human efforts alone may not be sufficient to overcome the strong city or conquer Edom. Instead, he looks to God for assistance and guidance. This verse reflects David’s dependence on God’s wisdom and direction to lead him through the challenges he faces.

Application:As believers today, we can learn from David’s example and apply this verse to our own lives. We may encounter strongholds or challenging situations that seem insurmountable. It could be personal struggles, difficult relationships, or daunting circumstances. Like David, we should turn to God for guidance, seeking His wisdom and direction in navigating through these challenges.

  • Trusting in God’s guidance:David’s question, “Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?” implies a trust in God’s ability to guide and lead him. When we face obstacles, we can have confidence that God is with us and will provide the necessary guidance. It may not always be easy or immediate, but as we seek His will and follow His leading, He will make a way for us.
  • Prayer and reliance on God:This verse also highlights the importance of prayer and reliance on God’s strength. In our own lives, when faced with difficulties, we should approach God in prayer, acknowledging our need for His guidance and assistance. By seeking His will and surrendering our plans and desires to Him, we invite His intervention and trust that He will lead us through the challenges we face.
