Listen to this article

Because hee hath inclined his eare vnto mee: therefore will I call vpon him as long as I liue. Psalms 116:2 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of praise, lament, thanksgiving, and trust in God. Psalm 116 is attributed to an unknown author and is categorized as a psalm of thanksgiving. It is a personal testimony of gratitude and praise to God for delivering the psalmist from distress. In verse 2 the psalmist declares, “Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.”

This passage acknowledges that God has listened attentively to the psalmist’s prayer and has responded with mercy and grace. The phrase “God has inclined His ear” emphasizes His willingness to listen, His attentiveness to the cries of His people, and His active involvement in the lives of those who call upon Him. It signifies that God is not distant or indifferent but is engaged with those who seek Him.

Because of experiencing God’s responsive ear, the psalmist commits to continue calling upon God throughout his life. That commitment demonstrates faith in God’s faithfulness and a desire to maintain a close relationship with Him through prayer.

The affirmation provides comfort and encouragement that God hears our prayers in times of distress. It also challenges believers to cultivate a consistent prayer life and to trust in God’s faithful character. Recognizing God’s attentiveness allows us to draw confidence that He is present with us when we cry out.

We are invited to develop a lifestyle of prayer, maintaining an ongoing and intimate relationship with God through continual communication. The psalmist’s response reflects trust in God’s character and His willingness to act on behalf of His people, and we likewise can have confidence in God’s faithfulness. Overall, Psalm 116:2 reminds us of the importance of prayer, God’s attentiveness to our needs, and our commitment to a lifelong relationship with Him through communication and trust.
