Listen to this article

Then called I vpon the Name of the Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee deliuer my soule. Psalms 116:4 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 116 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise, attributed to King David. It expresses gratitude for God’s deliverance from a personal crisis, and the psalmist’s commitment to worship and serve the Lord.

Calling upon the Name of the LORD:

The psalmist begins by proclaiming that he called upon the name of the LORD. This phrase signifies a deep reliance on God and a conscious act of seeking His intervention. It reflects a personal relationship with God and a recognition of His power and ability to save.

Desperation and Soul’s Deliverance:

The psalmist beseeches the LORD to deliver his soul. This indicates a state of distress or crisis where the psalmist’s very life or well‑being is at stake. It highlights the psalmist’s recognition that only God has the power to rescue him from his troubles. The psalmist acknowledges his dependence on the Lord for salvation and restoration.

Trusting in God’s Deliverance:

By calling upon the name of the LORD and seeking His deliverance, the psalmist demonstrates unwavering trust in God’s faithfulness and ability to save. Despite the challenges and difficulties he faces, the psalmist places his hope in God’s intervention. It is an act of surrendering his situation to the Lord and relying on His mercy and grace.

Application:

As believers, we can draw several applications from this verse. We should cultivate a habit of calling upon the name of the LORD in times of trouble, turning to Him when we face challenges, knowing that He is ready to hear our prayers and intervene. We must recognize our dependence on God; the psalmist’s plea for deliverance reflects a humble acknowledgment of our inability to save ourselves, prompting us to acknowledge our need for God’s guidance, strength, and salvation. Trust in God’s faithfulness is encouraged, giving us confidence in His character and promises, and assurance that He is always near and ready to save us from distress. Finally, remembering that the book of Psalms contains a collection of poetic prayers, hymns, and expressions of faith helps us appreciate that each verse can offer personal insights and inspiration, and studying them in context deepens our understanding of the psalmist’s experiences and emotions.
