Listen to this article

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.”

Background and Context:Psalm 118 is part of the collection of Psalms known as the “Egyptian Hallel” (Psalms 113-118), which were traditionally recited during the Passover celebration. It is attributed to King David and is considered a song of thanksgiving and praise.

Gratitude and Thanksgiving:The verse begins with a call to give thanks unto the LORD. Gratitude is a recurring theme throughout the Psalms, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and expressing thanks to God for His goodness and faithfulness in our lives.

The Goodness of God:The psalmist declares that God is good. God’s goodness is an essential aspect of His character and nature. It refers to His moral excellence, kindness, love, and benevolence. God’s goodness is unwavering and constant, regardless of our circumstances.

The Enduring Mercy of God:The psalmist further declares that God’s mercy endures forever. Mercy refers to God’s compassion, forgiveness, and willingness to show undeserved kindness to His people. It is not based on our merit but on His grace. The phrase “endureth for ever” emphasizes the eternal and unchanging nature of God’s mercy.

Application:

  • Gratitude:We are encouraged to cultivate an attitude of gratitude in our lives, continually giving thanks to God for His goodness and mercy.
  • Trust:Recognizing God’s enduring mercy can strengthen our trust in Him. We can have confidence that His love and compassion will never fail us, regardless of the challenges we face.
  • Praise and Worship:This verse reminds us to praise and worship God for His goodness and mercy. It invites us to express our gratitude through songs of praise, prayer, and acts of worship.
  • Connection to Jesus Christ:

As Christians, we can see a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ in this verse. Jesus is the ultimate embodiment of God’s goodness and mercy. Through His sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection, He demonstrated God’s enduring mercy towards humanity, offering forgiveness and salvation to all who believe in Him.

In conclusion, Psalm 118:1 calls us to give thanks to the LORD for His goodness and emphasizes the enduring nature of His mercy. It reminds us to cultivate gratitude, trust in His unfailing love, and offer praise and worship for His abundant blessings.
