This is the Lords doing: it is marueilous in our eyes. Psalms 118:23 (KJV)

Psalm 118 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God for His goodness and deliverance. It was likely written for a specific occasion, such as the dedication of the rebuilt temple or a victory in battle. The psalm emphasizes the steadfast love and faithfulness of God and encourages the people to trust in Him.

The opening declaration, “This is the LORD’s doing,” shows the psalmist’s clear acknowledgment that the events being celebrated are the result of God’s direct intervention. It affirms that everything that happens is ultimately under the control of the Lord, highlighting divine sovereignty.

When the psalmist adds, “it is marvellous in our eyes,” he expresses wonder and amazement at what God has accomplished. The works of the Lord are portrayed as extraordinary, awe‑inspiring, and worthy of heartfelt praise. This sense of marvel points to the greatness and incomprehensible nature of God’s deeds.

Key themes that emerge are divine sovereignty and the marvelous works of God. The verse underscores that God is the ultimate author of the events being celebrated, and that His works exceed human understanding, inviting believers to admire and trust Him.

Application flows naturally from these truths.

As believers, we are called to recognize God’s sovereignty in our own lives, trusting that He is in control even amid challenging or uncertain circumstances. Such recognition can bring peace and assurance, echoing the promise that God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28). The verse also urges us to cultivate a sense of awe and wonder toward God—taking time to reflect on His marvelous works, allowing that reflection to deepen our reverence, gratitude, and joy.

Related Scriptures reinforce these points: Proverbs 3:5‑6 invites us to trust the Lord with all our heart and not rely on our own understanding, while Ephesians 3:20‑21 reminds us that God is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, bringing glory to Him through the church and Christ Jesus throughout all generations.
