It is better to trust in the Lord: then to put confidence in man. Psalms 118:8 (KJV)

Psalm 118:8 (KJV) declares, “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” This brief yet profound statement invites us to examine the verse in its broader context and draw practical lessons for daily living.

Historical Context

Psalm 118 is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise, traditionally attributed to King David. It celebrates God’s steadfast love, deliverance, and salvation. Many readers see Messianic overtones throughout the psalm, especially in verses that later echo in the New Testament. Verse 8 specifically highlights the superiority of trusting in God over relying on human beings.

Trust in the Lord

The verse emphasizes that trusting in the Lord is the better course. To trust God means to rely on His faithfulness, wisdom, and power rather than on human abilities, opinions, or resources. God is presented as the ultimate source of strength, guidance, and salvation, inviting believers to place their confidence in Him above all else.

The Limitations of Human Confidence

Conversely, the passage warns against putting confidence in man. Human relationships are valuable, yet people are fallible and limited. They can fail, err, or lack understanding, leading to disappointment when we depend on them alone. The verse calls us to recognize that only God is perfect and never fails.

Implications for Our Lives

Practically, this teaching urges us to prioritize our trust in God. We should seek His guidance, rely on His promises, and avoid leaning solely on human wisdom, strength, or advice. Cultivating a deep, personal relationship with God enables us to depend on Him in every area of life, from decisions to trials.

The Fulfillment in Jesus Christ

Psalm 118 contains Messianic elements that find fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The rejected stone becoming the cornerstone (quoted in Matthew 21:42) points to Christ, who exemplified unwavering trust in the Father throughout His earthly ministry. He is the ultimate source of salvation and the one in whom believers place their eternal trust.

In summary, Psalm 118:8 calls us to a decisive choice: trust in the Lord, whose character is immutable, rather than in the uncertain confidence of humanity. By anchoring our lives in God’s steadfast love, we experience true security and hope.
