Psalms 119:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.”

1. Context:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its emphasis on the Word of God. It consists of 176 verses, divided into sections based on the Hebrew alphabet. Each section focuses on different aspects of God’s law, precepts, and statutes. Verse 17 falls under the section headed by the Hebrew letter “Gimel.”

The psalmist’s prayer begins with a plea for God to deal bountifully with His servant. The psalmist recognizes that true life and spiritual vitality come from the Lord. By using the word “bountifully,” the psalmist expresses a desire for an overflowing measure of God’s goodness and blessing. It indicates a deep longing for God’s gracious intervention in their life.

The psalmist’s ultimate goal is to live in accordance with God’s Word. The phrase “and keep thy word” reveals the psalmist’s commitment to obeying and cherishing God’s commandments. This verse reflects the psalmist’s understanding that a life of obedience to God’s Word leads to true and abundant life.

By acknowledging their status as a servant, the psalmist demonstrates humility and dependency on God. The psalmist recognizes that apart from God’s bountiful dealings and sustaining power, they cannot truly live or keep God’s Word. This verse highlights the importance of relying on God’s grace and strength to live a life pleasing to Him.

5. Application:As we reflect on Psalm 119:17, we can learn several valuable lessons:

  • a. Recognize our dependency on God: Just as the psalmist acknowledges their need for God’s bountiful dealing, we should humbly recognize our dependence on Him for spiritual life and vitality.
  • b. Seek God’s Word: The psalmist’s desire to keep God’s Word should inspire us to prioritize studying, meditating, and applying Scripture in our lives.
  • c. Pray for God’s intervention: We can follow the psalmist’s example and pray for God’s bountiful dealings in our lives, asking Him to provide us with His grace, mercy, and blessings.
  • d. Embrace the role of a servant: By adopting a servant’s heart, we acknowledge our submission to God’s will and surrender to His authority.
