“My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.”

Psalm 119:172 (KJV) says:

“My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.”

Context:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the book of Psalms and is known for its emphasis on the Word of God and the psalmist’s love for it. It is an acrostic psalm, with each section starting with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This verse comes towards the end of the psalm and highlights the psalmist’s commitment to speaking and proclaiming God’s Word.

The psalmist’s commitment to speaking:The verse begins with the declaration, “My tongue shall speak of thy word.” Here, the psalmist expresses their determination to use their tongue to proclaim and talk about God’s Word. It signifies an active engagement with the Scriptures and a desire to share its truths with others.

The nature of God’s commandments:The verse continues, stating, “for all thy commandments are righteousness.” This phrase emphasizes the righteousness and moral perfection of God’s commandments. The psalmist recognizes that God’s instructions, laws, and precepts are founded on righteousness and reflect His holy character. The commandments of God serve as a guide for righteous living and reveal His standards for His people.

Application:

  • Psalm 119:172 highlights the importance of not only personally studying and meditating on God’s Word but also speaking about it. As believers, we are called to share the truth of God’s Word with others, proclaiming His righteousness and the principles found within His commandments.

This verse encourages us to use our words, conversations, and teachings to exalt the Word of God and to communicate its life-changing power. By doing so, we participate in spreading God’s truth and righteousness, thereby bringing honour and glory to Him.

Additionally, this verse reminds us of the value of aligning our speech with the teachings of Scripture. It prompts us to examine our words and ensure that they are in harmony with God’s righteous commandments. By speaking in accordance with His Word, we can reflect His righteousness and become effective witnesses of His truth.
