Psalms 119:63

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.”

Context:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the Word of God. It consists of 176 verses, each addressing the beauty, power, and significance of God’s law. The psalmist expresses a deep love for God’s commands and seeks to live in obedience to them.

Companionship:The verse begins with the declaration, “I am a companion of all them that fear thee.” The psalmist acknowledges his association and fellowship with those who fear God. The fear of God refers to a reverential awe, respect, and obedience towards Him. The psalmist recognizes the importance of surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who share a reverence for God. Such companionship is valuable because it encourages spiritual growth, provides support, and helps one stay on the path of righteousness.

Keeping God’s precepts:The verse continues, “and of them that keep thy precepts.” The psalmist emphasizes the importance of obedience to God’s precepts or commandments. Keeping God’s precepts involves following His instructions, living in accordance with His Word, and aligning one’s actions with His will. The psalmist identifies himself as a companion of those who share this commitment to obeying God’s commands.

Application:This verse serves as a reminder of the significance of godly companionship and obedience to God’s Word. As believers, we are encouraged to seek fellowship with those who fear God and are committed to living by His precepts. Surrounding ourselves with such companions can provide mutual encouragement, accountability, and spiritual edification. Additionally, it is essential to prioritise obedience to God’s commands, recognising that they are meant for our good and guide us in righteous living.
