Psalms 119:75

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on God’s Word and the psalmist’s love for it. This particular verse, Psalm 119:75, states:“I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.”

Here, the psalmist acknowledges two key aspects of God’s nature: His righteous judgments and His faithfulness in afflicting or disciplining His people. Let’s break it down and explore the meaning and significance of this verse.

“I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right”: This phrase highlights the psalmist’s conviction and confidence in God’s righteous judgments. It reflects an understanding that God’s ways are perfect, just, and morally upright. The psalmist acknowledges that God’s judgments are based on truth and righteousness, and they provide guidance and wisdom for His people. This recognition demonstrates the psalmist’s trust in God’s sovereignty and wisdom.

“Thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me”: Here, the psalmist acknowledges that God, in His faithfulness, has allowed affliction or suffering in their life. The psalmist recognizes that trials and difficulties are not a result of God’s indifference or abandonment but are permitted by His faithful love. It implies that affliction serves a purpose and can be a means through which God teaches, refines, and molds His people.

This verse provides several insights and lessons for us today:

  • a. Trust in God’s righteous judgments: We can find solace and trust in God’s judgments because they are always right and just. Even when we face difficult circumstances or struggle to understand why certain things happen, we can be confident that God’s judgments are based on His perfect wisdom and goodness.
  • b. God’s faithfulness in affliction: Affliction and trials are not necessarily signs of God’s displeasure or abandonment. In His faithfulness, God may allow challenges in our lives to refine our character, deepen our faith, or redirect our paths. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s love and faithfulness endure even in the midst of adversity.
  • c. Personal reflection and surrender: Like the psalmist, we can reflect on our own lives and consider how God’s judgments and faithfulness have shaped us. We can examine our responses to affliction, seeking to align ourselves with God’s purposes and surrender to His refining work in us.
  • d. A call to trust and obedience: This verse reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s righteousness and remaining obedient to His Word even in difficult times. When we trust in His judgments and faithfully follow His ways, we can find peace and assurance in His faithfulness.

In summary, Psalm 119:75 encourages us to trust in God’s righteous judgments and acknowledge His faithfulness even in times of affliction. It teaches us to rely on His wisdom, surrender to His purposes, and find comfort in His unwavering love.
