Psalms 119:90

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.”

Certainly!: Here is a Bible study on Psalm 119:90 (KJV):

Verse: “Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.”

1. Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the Word of God. It is an acrostic psalm, with each stanza beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This particular verse is found in the section titled “Lamedh,” which encompasses verses 89-96.

2. God’s Faithfulness: The verse begins by highlighting the faithfulness of God. Faithfulness is one of God’s enduring attributes throughout all generations. It emphasises His unwavering commitment to fulfilling His promises and being trustworthy. God’s faithfulness is not limited to a specific time or group of people; it extends to all generations, encompassing past, present, and future.

3. The Earth’s Establishment: The verse goes on to declare that God has established the earth, and it abides. This statement recognises God as the Creator and Sustainer of the earth. He brought the world into existence and continues to uphold it by His power. The phrase “it abideth” indicates the enduring nature of God’s creation. Despite the changes and challenges the earth may face, God’s sustaining power remains constant.

4. God’s Sovereignty: This verse points to God’s sovereignty over creation. By establishing the earth, God demonstrates His authority and control over all things. He is the supreme ruler, and nothing is outside His jurisdiction. This understanding encourages believers to trust in God’s providence, knowing that He is in control of every situation.

5. Application: Reflecting on this verse, we can draw several practical applications:

  • a. Trust in God’s faithfulness: God’s faithfulness is unchanging and extends to every generation. We can find comfort and security in knowing that God will fulfil His promises and be faithful to His word.
  • b. Recognise God’s role as Creator and Sustainer: The earth’s existence and its ongoing stability are a testament to God’s power and authority. We should appreciate and marvel at His creation, acknowledging our dependence on Him for every breath we take.
  • c. Surrender to God’s sovereignty: Understanding that God has established the earth reminds us of His ultimate control over all things. We can submit our lives to His sovereignty, trusting Him even in uncertain times, knowing that He holds the world in His hands.
