Psalms 122:4

Listen to this article

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.”

Psalm 122 is attributed to King David and is one of the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134) traditionally sung by pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem for the feasts of the Lord. It is a joyful psalm expressing the delight of the psalmist upon hearing the invitation to enter the house of the Lord.

Context and Historical Background:

Psalm 122 is categorized as a psalm of “Zion,” referring to Jerusalem, specifically Mount Zion, where the temple was located. During the time of King David, the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem and housed in a tent until the temple was built by King Solomon. The temple served as the central place of worship for the Israelites, where they would gather to offer sacrifices and seek the presence of God.

Expressing Joyful Anticipation:

The psalmist starts by saying, “I was glad when they said unto me.” This indicates that someone extended an invitation to the psalmist, inviting him to go to the house of the Lord. This invitation brings joy and gladness to the psalmist’s heart. It shows the eagerness and anticipation of being in God’s presence and engaging in worship with fellow believers.

The Significance of Going to the House of the Lord:

The phrase “Let us go into the house of the LORD” signifies the psalmist’s desire to enter the temple and participate in communal worship. The house of the Lord represented a place of encountering God, seeking His guidance, and offering sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. It was a symbol of unity among the people of Israel, where they could come together in fellowship and devotion to God.

Spiritual Application:

  • Worship and Delight:Like the psalmist, we should approach worship with a joyful heart, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to gather with fellow believers and seek God’s presence. The house of the Lord can be seen as a representation of the local church or any gathering of believers where God is worshiped and His Word is proclaimed.
  • Unity and Fellowship:The invitation to “go into the house of the LORD” reminds us of the importance of unity and fellowship among believers. Coming together as a community of faith strengthens our relationship with God and encourages us to support and uplift one another.
  • Seeking God’s Presence:Just as the psalmist longed to be in the house of the Lord, we should have a hunger and thirst for God’s presence. Going to the house of the Lord, whether physically or metaphorically, provides an opportunity to draw near to God, offer our worship, and find spiritual nourishment.
  • Anticipating Spiritual Growth:The psalmist’s gladness suggests an expectation of spiritual growth and refreshment. When we approach worship with a joyful attitude and open heart, we position ourselves to receive from God, grow in our faith, and be transformed by His Word.

In summary, Psalm 122:4 expresses the joy and anticipation of the psalmist upon receiving an invitation to enter the house of the Lord. It reminds us of the importance of worship, unity, and fellowship, as well as the value of seeking God’s presence and anticipating spiritual growth.
