Listen to this article

“Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s helpful to consider the context of the entire psalm. Psalm 128 is a song of ascent, traditionally sung by the Israelites as they journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. It emphasizes the importance of living a godly life within the context of one’s family and community.

The imagery of a fruitful vine:The verse begins with the imagery of a wife being compared to a fruitful vine. In biblical symbolism, a vine is often associated with prosperity, growth, and abundance. It represents a healthy and flourishing life. This imagery portrays a wife who brings blessings, nourishment, and fruitfulness to her household. It suggests that she is a source of support, strength, and productivity, just as a vine provides sustenance and beauty.

The significance of “by the sides of thine house”:The phrase “by the sides of thine house” suggests that the wife’s influence and impact extend throughout the household. She is not confined to a particular role or limited to a specific area but rather contributes to the overall well-being of the family. It implies that she is present in the daily affairs of the household and plays an essential role in its functioning.

The metaphor of “olive plants round about thy table”:The verse continues by comparing children to olive plants around a table. Olive trees and their fruit, the olives, were highly valued in biblical times. They were associated with abundance, prosperity, and vitality. Just as olive plants flourish and grow, children are seen as a blessing and a source of joy and support within the family. The mention of them being “round about thy table” suggests a sense of unity, togetherness, and fellowship.

Symbolism of the table:The table is a symbol of provision, sustenance, and fellowship. It represents the place where the family gathers for meals, sharing in the blessings of God’s provision and enjoying each other’s company. The presence of children around the table signifies a thriving family life and a continuation of God’s blessings through the generations.

Overall, Psalm 128:3 highlights the importance of a flourishing family life and the blessings that come from walking in God’s ways. It emphasizes the role of a wife as a source of productivity and support, and the significance of children as a continuation of God’s blessings. It encourages individuals to embrace their roles within the family unit and to recognize the value and impact they can have on the household.
