Listen to this article

“The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.”

Context:Psalm 134 is one of the fifteen songs of ascent (Psalms 120-134) traditionally sung by the Israelites as they made their way up to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. These psalms were expressions of worship and praise.

The LORD that made heaven and earth: This verse begins by acknowledging the Lord as the Creator of heaven and earth. It emphasizes God’s sovereignty, power, and authority over all creation. As the Creator, He is worthy of worship and praise.

Bless thee: The psalmist prays for God’s blessings upon the people. Blessings from God encompass various aspects of life, including provision, protection, guidance, and favour. The psalmist desires that the people would experience the goodness and favour of God in their lives.

Out of Zion: Zion refers to the hill in Jerusalem where the temple was located. It was considered the dwelling place of God and the centre of worship for the Israelites. The psalmist recognises that blessings flow from God’s dwelling place and are extended to His people.

Key Lessons:

  • a. Recognition of God as Creator: The psalmist begins by acknowledging God’s authority as the Creator of heaven and earth. This reminds us of God’s power and sovereignty over all things. It encourages us to have a proper perspective of God’s greatness and give Him the worship and honour He deserves.
  • b. Praying for God’s blessings: The psalmist offers a prayer for God’s blessings upon the people. This teaches us the importance of seeking God’s favour and blessings in our lives. We can bring our needs, concerns, and desires before God, knowing that He is a loving Father who desires to bless His children.
  • c. Blessings from God’s dwelling place: The psalmist mentions Zion as the source of God’s blessings. As believers, we understand that God’s dwelling place is not limited to a physical location but is found in the hearts of His people through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We can approach God in prayer from any location and experience His blessings in our lives.

Application:

  • a. Worship and praise: Let us regularly offer worship and praise to God for His role as the Creator of heaven and earth. Recognising His power and sovereignty will deepen our reverence for Him and strengthen our faith.
  • b. Seeking God’s blessings: Take time to bring your needs and desires before God in prayer. Ask Him to pour out His blessings upon you, seeking His provision, protection, and guidance in all areas of your life.
  • c. Living in God’s presence: Remember that as a believer, you carry the presence of God within you. Allow His presence to transform your life and be a source of blessings to others. Seek to honour God in your actions and attitudes, reflecting His character in all you do.
