Psalms 138:1
“I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.”
Context:The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and lyrical songs often attributed to King David. It covers a wide range of emotions and experiences, including praise, thanksgiving, lament, and prayers. Psalm 138 is ascribed to David and is a song of thanksgiving and praise to God.
Praise with the Whole Heart:The psalmist declares, “I will praise thee with my whole heart.” This shows the psalmist’s commitment and devotion to worshiping God. It emphasizes that true praise should come from the depths of one’s being, involving sincerity, passion, and an undivided heart.
Worshiping Before the Gods:The psalmist further proclaims, “before the gods will I sing praise unto thee.” This statement can be understood in a couple of ways. Firstly, it could refer to praising God in the presence of earthly rulers or authorities who are considered gods in their respective cultures. It demonstrates the psalmist’s commitment to honoring God above any human authority. Alternatively, “gods” can refer to false gods or idols. In this case, the psalmist affirms their allegiance to the one true God and declares their intention to sing His praises in the face of any opposing belief or worship. It reflects the exclusivity of worshiping the God of Israel.
