Listen to this article

“Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.”

1. Context: It’s important to understand the context of a verse to grasp its meaning fully. Psalm 140 is attributed to David and is classified as a lament or a prayer for deliverance. David is seeking God’s protection from his enemies who are wicked and violent.

2. Seeking God’s Protection: In this verse, David acknowledges his need for God’s intervention and protection. He turns to the Lord and implores Him to keep him safe from the hands of the wicked. It reveals David’s dependence on God’s care and his trust in God’s ability to guard him.

3. Awareness of Enemies: David recognizes that he is facing opposition from wicked and violent individuals. These enemies have ill intentions towards him, seeking to overthrow his steps or cause him harm. David acknowledges their evil plans and seeks divine intervention to shield him from their schemes.

4. Trusting God’s Preservation: By addressing God as the one who can preserve him, David places his faith in God’s power and sovereignty. He acknowledges that it is God who has the ability to keep him safe from his enemies. David’s plea for protection reflects his confidence that God is capable of guarding his life.

5. Application: As we study this verse, we can draw some valuable lessons for our own lives. We can learn to rely on God’s protection and seek His guidance in times of trouble. Like David, we may face challenges or encounter opposition from wicked individuals. However, by placing our trust in God and seeking His intervention, we can find refuge and strength.

Additionally, this verse reminds us of the importance of being aware of our surroundings and discerning the intentions of those around us. We should be mindful of the potential threats and seek God’s guidance in navigating through difficult situations.
