Psalms 141:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:12
Listen to this article

“Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.”

1. Context:Psalm 141 is attributed to David and is a prayer for God’s guidance and protection. In this particular verse, David expresses his desire for God to guard his heart against evil influences and to keep him from engaging in wicked acts.

2. The plea for a guarded heart: David starts by asking God to “incline not my heart to any evil thing.” This reflects David’s awareness of the corrupting power of sinful desires and his sincere desire to remain faithful to God. He acknowledges the need for divine intervention to protect his heart from being drawn towards evil.

3. Rejecting participation in wicked works: David goes on to ask God to prevent him from “practicing wicked works with men that work iniquity.” David recognizes the influence of the company we keep and understands the potential harm of aligning himself with those who engage in wickedness. He seeks to distance himself from such individuals and their sinful activities.

4. The avoidance of worldly pleasures: The verse concludes with David’s request to be kept from “eating of their dainties.” Here, “dainties” refers to luxurious or pleasurable things. David acknowledges the allure and temptation of worldly pleasures, but he asks God to help him resist partaking in them if they are associated with wickedness.

Key Lessons:

  • a. Guarding the heart: David’s prayer highlights the importance of maintaining a vigilant and guarded heart. We should be aware of the influences around us and seek God’s help to resist evil inclinations.
  • b. Choosing godly associations: David’s plea teaches us the significance of surrounding ourselves with people who follow God’s ways. Our companions can either lead us closer to God or tempt us away from Him, so it is vital to be cautious in our relationships.
  • c. Prioritizing spiritual over worldly pleasures: David’s request to avoid indulging in “dainties” reminds us that our pursuit of pleasure should never compromise our commitment to righteousness. We should prioritize spiritual values over worldly allurements.

Application:

  • – Praying for God’s guidance and protection, asking Him to guard our hearts against evil influences.
  • – Being discerning about the company we keep, seeking relationships with those who share our commitment to godly living.
  • – Prioritizing our spiritual growth and relationship with God over the pursuit of worldly pleasures.

By following these principles, we can strive to live a life that is pleasing to God and resist the temptations of sin that may come our way.
