Psalms 147:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow. Psalms 147:18 (KJV)

To understand this verse better, it is important to look at the context of the entire psalm. Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise, highlighting God’s power and care for His people. It speaks of God’s sovereignty over creation, His wisdom, and His provision for those who trust in Him.

“He sendeth out his word” refers to God’s command or decree. The phrase emphasizes God’s authority and power, and in the context of this verse it points to His command over the weather elements. By sending out His word, God initiates the natural processes that follow.

“Melteth them” describes the melting of snow, hoarfrost, and ice mentioned in the preceding verses (Psalm 147:16‑17). It illustrates God’s control over the weather and His ability to bring about change in the natural elements. Some readers also see the phrase as indicating the breaking up or dissolution of storm clouds, both images underscoring God’s power to transform the world through His word.

“He causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow” highlights God’s control over wind and water. The wind is often associated with God’s Spirit or breath in Scripture, symbolizing His power and presence; here it signifies God’s action in stirring the wind. The flowing waters refer to the thawing of frozen water, the melting of ice, or the opening of streams and rivers as a result of His command.

Overall, Psalm 147:18 conveys that God exercises authority over nature through His word and His wind. The verse emphasizes His power to bring about change and to accomplish His purposes in the world. It invites believers to recognise God’s sovereignty and to trust in His provision and care.
