Listen to this article

“Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.”

Psalm 148:12 (KJV) Context:Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:

Psalm 148 is a hymn of praise, inviting all of creation to join in praising the Lord. It is a psalm that celebrates the greatness and glory of God, acknowledging His sovereignty and creative power. Verse 12 specifically addresses the heavens and the waters above the heavens, calling them to join in the praise of God.

The Heavens of Heavens:The phrase “heavens of heavens” refers to the highest heavens, beyond the sky that we can see. It represents the highest realm of the spiritual and heavenly realms. It encompasses the dwelling place of God and the angelic hosts. The psalmist calls upon this exalted realm to give praise to the Lord. This call emphasizes the vastness and majesty of God’s dominion, extending even beyond what human eyes can perceive.

The Waters Above the Heavens:The reference to the “waters that be above the heavens” is a poetic way of describing the celestial waters or the cosmic waters. In ancient cosmology, it was believed that there were waters above the sky, separating the earthly realm from the heavenly realm. This imagery is also found in the creation account in Genesis 1:6-8. The psalmist includes these celestial waters in the call to praise God, emphasizing that all aspects of creation should acknowledge and honor the Lord.

The verse as a whole portrays a grand and all-encompassing view of creation, from the highest heavens to the celestial waters. It highlights the psalmist’s desire for all creation to participate in praising the Lord. It serves as a reminder that all things were created by God, and therefore, all things should give Him glory.

Furthermore, this verse invites us to consider the vastness of God’s creation and His authority over it. It encourages us to recognize that the heavens, with all their magnificence and splendor, are subject to God’s command. It reminds us that even the elements that seem beyond our reach are under His control.

In summary, Psalm 148:12 calls upon the heavens of heavens and the waters above the heavens to join in praising the Lord. It emphasizes the vastness and majesty of God’s dominion and invites us to recognize His authority over all creation, including realms beyond our human comprehension.
