Listen to this article

“Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.”

Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and musical expressions of praise, worship, and prayer to God. Psalm 150 is the final psalm in the book and serves as a grand conclusion, calling for praise to God in His sanctuary.

Praise and Instruments:In Psalm 150:3, the psalmist encourages the use of specific musical instruments to praise God. The trumpet, psaltery, and harp were common instruments used in the worship of God in ancient Israel. These instruments are mentioned as examples, representing a variety of musical sounds and instruments that could be used to praise God.

Symbolism of Instruments:Each instrument mentioned in this verse has symbolic significance. The trumpet was often used to announce significant events and call people to attention. It can be seen as a call to worship and praise, summoning God’s people to acknowledge His greatness. The psaltery and harp are stringed instruments that produce melodious and harmonious sounds, representing the beauty and harmony of worship.

Praise as an Act of Worship:The verse emphasizes the importance of praising God. Praise is a fundamental aspect of worship and expresses adoration, thanksgiving, and exaltation of God’s character and deeds. God is worthy of praise, and using musical instruments is one way to offer Him heartfelt worship and glorify His name.

Application:While the specific instruments mentioned in Psalm 150:3 were relevant to the ancient Israelites, the principle behind the verse remains applicable today. The instruments mentioned serve as examples, and in modern times, we can use various musical instruments and styles to praise God. The focus should be on the heart behind the music, with the goal of honoring and glorifying God.

  • In summary, Psalm 150:3 encourages us to praise God with musical instruments. It highlights the importance of praising God and using various instruments to express our adoration and worship. As we engage in worship, whether through music or other forms, it is crucial to have a sincere heart, focusing on God’s greatness and offering Him our praise.
