Psalms 18:35

Listen to this article

“Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.”

Context: Psalm 18 is attributed to David, who wrote it as a song of deliverance and thanksgiving to God for delivering him from the hands of his enemies, including King Saul. This particular verse expresses David’s gratitude for God’s protection, support, and guidance.

God’s shield of salvation: David acknowledges that God has provided him with the shield of salvation. In ancient times, a shield was a crucial defensive weapon, protecting the warrior from the enemy’s attacks. David sees God as his ultimate protector, surrounding him with His salvation. This shield represents God’s deliverance and His power to save His people from harm.

God’s right hand: David further declares that God’s right hand has held him up. The right hand is often associated with strength and support. David recognizes that it is God’s mighty hand that has sustained him and kept him secure. This imagery highlights the divine assistance and intervention in times of trouble and the assurance that God is always present to provide help and guidance.

God’s gentleness: David attributes his greatness to God’s gentleness. This may seem paradoxical, as we often associate greatness with power and might. However, David acknowledges that it is God’s gentle and kind nature that has elevated him. God’s gentleness refers to His loving care, tenderness, and compassion. It is through God’s gentle guidance and nurture that David has grown and achieved greatness.

Application: As we reflect on this verse, we can draw several lessons for our own lives:

  • – Trust in God’s protection: Just as David trusted in God’s shield of salvation, we can rely on God’s faithfulness to guard and shield us from harm. We can find comfort in knowing that God is our ultimate protector.
  • – Seek God’s guidance: Like David, we should look to God’s right hand for guidance and support. We can trust that God’s strength and wisdom will sustain us through challenges and lead us on the right path.
  • – Embrace God’s gentleness: Recognize that God’s gentleness is not weakness but a source of strength. God’s love and compassion can shape and transform us into the people He has called us to be. As we yield to God’s gentle guidance, we can experience personal growth and greatness.
