Psalms 18:50
Great deliuerance giueth he to his King: and sheweth mercy to his Annointed, to Dauid, and to his seede for euermore. Psalms 18:50 (KJV)
Psalm 18 is a psalm of thanksgiving composed by David after God rescued him from the hands of his enemies, especially from the relentless pursuit of King Saul. In this hymn of praise David celebrates God’s faithfulness, strength, and the deliverance that has marked his life.
The opening words, “Great deliverance giveth he to his king,” acknowledge God as the source of extraordinary rescue. David’s experience included physical battles, spiritual trials, emotional distress, and mental anguish, yet God repeatedly intervened. Believers today can likewise trust that the same God who delivered David is able to bring deliverance in our own difficult circumstances.
The phrase “his king” points directly to David, the anointed ruler of Israel. God’s protection of David was not merely because of his royal status but also because David was a man after God’s own heart. This highlights the special relationship between the sovereign and the one He has chosen to lead His people.
“Sheweth mercy to his anointed” underscores the compassionate character of God. Mercy here means God’s loving restraint from the punishment we deserve and the extension of favor toward His people. While the verse speaks of David, the mercy ultimately flows to all who are in covenant relationship with God through faith in Christ.
The reference to “David, and to his seed” points forward to the divine promise of an enduring dynasty. The covenant made to David (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12‑16) finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of David, who reigns forever as King.
The concluding words “for evermore” affirm that God’s mercy and blessings to David’s lineage are perpetual. This everlasting covenant assures believers that the blessings of God’s faithfulness are not temporary but extend eternally to those who belong to Christ.
Application: The passage encourages us to view God as our Deliverer and to place our trust in Him during trials. Like David, we should seek a heart that aligns with God’s, for it is through such intimacy that we experience His special care. God’s mercy remains available despite our flaws; we are called to seek His forgiveness and rely on His compassion. As believers, we are grafted into the spiritual seed of David and inherit the promises of the covenant. This truth offers comfort that God’s mercy and blessings are enduring, reaching us forever through our relationship with Jesus Christ.
