Psalms 19:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.”

1. Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetry and songs written by various authors, including King David. This particular psalm, attributed to David, celebrates the greatness of God’s creation and His revelation through both nature and His law.

2. God’s Revelation in Nature: In Psalm 19:1, David begins by declaring, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” Here, he acknowledges that God’s creation, specifically the skies and the celestial bodies, proclaim His glory and testify to His creative power. In verse 2, David extends this idea by stating that each day and each night communicates a message. The continuous cycle of day and night serves as a witness to God’s existence and His divine attributes.

3. God’s Communication: The phrase “uttereth speech” in verse 2 suggests that the natural world speaks a language that declares God’s majesty and character. Though nature’s speech is not audible in the same way as human language, it reveals knowledge about the Creator. The regularity and orderliness of day and night, the changing seasons, and the intricate design of creation all bear witness to God’s wisdom and power.

4. The Knowledge Revealed: The latter part of verse 2 says, “night unto night sheweth knowledge.” In addition to speaking, the night also reveals knowledge. The darkness of the night, with its expanse of stars, teaches us about God’s limitless wisdom and His role as the source of light. The night sky presents a wealth of knowledge, inviting us to marvel at the Creator’s infinite understanding and grasp of the universe.

5. Implications for Believers: As believers, we can find encouragement and inspiration in Psalm 19:2. It reminds us that God’s revelation is not limited to His written Word. He also reveals Himself through the wonders of creation. By observing nature, we can discern glimpses of God’s character, His creativity, His order, and His faithfulness. The regular rhythm of day and night can serve as a constant reminder of God’s presence in our lives.

6. Appreciating God’s Revelation: Psalm 19:2 calls us to appreciate and reflect on the beauty and knowledge revealed through the natural world. It encourages us to engage with God’s creation, whether through observing the intricate details of plants and animals, contemplating the vastness of the cosmos, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the sights and sounds of nature. In doing so, we can grow in our understanding of God and deepen our sense of awe and reverence for Him.
