Psalms 21:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:17

“His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.”

Psalm 21:5 (KJV):

“His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.”

Context:The Book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers, songs, and expressions of praise. Psalm 21 is attributed to King David and is categorised as a royal psalm, which means it focuses on the kingship of God and His anointed ruler. This particular verse highlights the glory, honour, and majesty that God bestows upon the king.

The Glory of God:The verse begins by acknowledging that God’s glory is great in salvation. Salvation refers to God’s deliverance, rescue, and redemption of His people. It implies that God’s glory is magnified when He saves and protects His chosen ones. This recognition highlights the power and majesty of God as the one who accomplishes salvation.

Honour and Majesty:The verse further states that honour and majesty are laid upon the king by God. This implies that the king is appointed and anointed by God to rule with authority and dignity. God bestows honour and majesty upon the king, indicating that the king’s position is elevated and deserving of respect.

Application for Believers:a. God’s Glory in Salvation: As believers, we can reflect on the greatness of God’s glory displayed in our salvation through Jesus Christ. God’s love and grace are demonstrated through His redemptive work on the cross. We can find joy and awe in the fact that God’s glory shines brightly when He rescues and transforms lives.

b. Honouring God: Just as honour and majesty are laid upon the king, we are called to honour and give glory to God in our lives. This involves recognising His sovereignty, obeying His commandments, and acknowledging His worthiness. By honouring God, we demonstrate our reverence and love for Him.

c. God’s Appointed Authority: While this verse specifically refers to the king, it also reminds us of God’s establishment of authority in general. Recognising that God is the ultimate authority and that He appoints leaders can help us navigate our interactions with human authorities. We are called to respect and pray for those in positions of authority, understanding that God is ultimately in control.

Connection to Jesus Christ:As Christians, we see a deeper fulfilment of this verse in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the anointed King, the Messiah, who perfectly embodies the glory, honour, and majesty of God. Through His death and resurrection, He accomplished the ultimate salvation, displaying the greatness of God’s glory. We can find comfort and inspiration in knowing that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords, exalted by God in all His glory.

Remember, studying and meditating on Scripture is a lifelong journey, and it’s always beneficial to explore various translations, commentaries, and resources to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
