Psalms 3:8
“Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.”
Context:Psalm 3 is attributed to David and is described as a prayer of David when he fled from his son Absalom. David composed this psalm during a time of distress and danger, seeking God’s deliverance and protection.
Salvation Belongs to the Lord:The verse begins with a profound statement that salvation belongs to the Lord. In Hebrew, the word for “salvation” is “Yeshua,” which is the same root as the name “Jesus.” This verse acknowledges that ultimate deliverance and salvation come from God alone. It emphasises the divine power and authority to save, implying that human efforts are insufficient.
God’s Blessing on His People:The second part of the verse declares that God’s blessing is upon His people. In the context of this psalm, David, as the king of Israel, acknowledges that the people of Israel are God’s chosen ones. Despite the challenges and adversity, David trusts that God’s favour and blessings are upon the people.
Selah:The term “Selah” appears frequently in the Book of Psalms. Its exact meaning is uncertain, but it is commonly believed to indicate a pause, a musical interlude, or a moment for reflection. It prompts the reader to pause and meditate on the preceding words and their significance.
