Psalms 31:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:25
Listen to this article

Bowe downe thine eare to me, deliuer me speedily: be thou my strong rocke, for an house of defence to saue me. Psalms 31:2 (KJV)

In this verse the psalmist begins by earnestly asking God to incline His ear and listen attentively to the prayer. The request reveals a deep desire for God’s presence and engagement with the psalmist’s situation, and it acknowledges that God is the ultimate source of help and refuge.

The psalmist then pleads for speedy deliverance, an urgent appeal that suggests a pressing, distressing circumstance. By seeking immediate rescue, the psalmist affirms confidence in God’s power and ability to provide swift intervention.

Although the exact wording “strong rock” and “house of defence” does not appear in Psalm 31:2, such images are employed elsewhere in the Psalms to portray God’s strength, stability, and reliability as a secure refuge. The metaphors of a rock and a house convey a firm foundation and protective shelter, underscoring the psalmist’s view of God as an unwavering source of strength and protection.

Overall, the verse reflects the psalmist’s deep trust and reliance on God in times of trouble. It teaches the importance of turning to God in prayer, recognizing His power to deliver from difficult situations, and seeking His presence as a place of security and shelter. The psalmist’s confidence that God is a strong foundation and a reliable defender invites believers to place their hope in Him.

As we reflect on this passage, we are encouraged to cultivate a similar attitude of dependency: to approach God with our needs, to seek His guidance, and to trust in His unfailing love and protection. By doing so, we align ourselves with the psalmist’s example of prayerful reliance on the One who is both rock and refuge.
