Plead my cause (O Lord) with them that striue with mee: fight against them that fight against me. Psalms 35:1 (KJV)

Plead

my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me. Psalms 35:1 (KJV)

Understanding the background of Psalm 35 is crucial for interpreting its meaning. David finds himself unjustly persecuted by enemies who are “striving” with him and “fighting” against him. In response, he turns to God, seeking divine intervention and justice.

David begins by asking the Lord to “plead my cause.” This phrase reveals his confidence in God’s justice and his belief that God will defend him against his adversaries. He is essentially asking God to act as his advocate and to fight on his behalf.

He acknowledges that his opponents are actively engaged in contention, not merely holding differing opinions but pursuing malicious actions intended to harm him unjustly. The strife mentioned refers to these hostile intentions and deeds.

David then asks God to “fight against them that fight against me.” Some interpreters understand this as extending beyond human foes to spiritual forces of darkness. He recognizes that ultimate victory depends on God’s intervention, demonstrating his trust in God’s strength and power.

While the verse is rooted in David’s specific circumstances, it offers a general application for believers who face opposition, conflict, or injustice. In such times we can turn to God, pleading for His intervention, confident that He is just and capable of defending us. We may seek His guidance and ask Him to fight the battles we encounter, trusting in His wisdom, strength, and ultimate victory.

Remember that studying the Bible involves more than isolated verses; considering the context, themes, and the entire book enriches understanding. Exploring the remaining verses of Psalm 35 and reading the psalm in its entirety provides a fuller picture of David’s experience and his reliance on God.
