Psalms 35:2

Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand vp for mine helpe. Psalms 35:2 (KJV)

Context: To grasp the meaning of this verse it helps to view it within the larger setting of Psalm 35. The psalmist, David, is in deep distress, suffering unjust persecution from enemies who seek his ruin. Throughout the psalm he cries out for divine intervention and for God’s justice against those who oppose him.

Shield and Buckler: The imagery of a shield and a buckler reflects common protective gear in ancient warfare. The shield is described as a large, rectangular object made of wood or metal, intended to protect the whole body. It is also portrayed as a round wooden shield, often covered with leather, that shields the wearer. The buckler, by contrast, was a smaller, round shield held in the hand to deflect blows. Together these pieces symbolize God’s comprehensive protection and defense against the attacks of David’s foes.

Take Hold: The appeal “Take hold of shield and buckler” is a vivid call to action. David implores God to grasp and wield these instruments of defense on his behalf. The phrase conveys a plea for God’s active intervention, asking Him to become the one who defends and shields the psalmist from harm.

Stand Up for My Help: The second half of the verse, “and stand up for my help,” underscores the urgency of David’s request. He asks God to rise and act as his helper, indicating a total reliance on divine strength and assistance in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Overall Reflection: Psalm 35:2 encapsulates David’s earnest petition for God’s protective power. By employing vivid military language, he portrays his dire circumstances and earnestly beseeches God’s active involvement. This passage reminds believers that in moments of trouble they can turn to God, entrusting their battles and struggles into His hands, confident that He is the ultimate defender and helper.
