Listen to this article

“With hypocritical mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.”

Psalm 35 is attributed to King David and is classified as a psalm of lament. In this particular verse, David expresses his distress and anguish over the actions of his adversaries. Let’s break it down further:

Context:It’s essential to understand the context of this verse within the larger context of Psalm 35. The psalm begins with David pleading for God’s intervention against his enemies who seek to harm him unjustly. He prays for God’s protection, deliverance, and justice.

Hypocritical mockers:David describes his adversaries as “hypocritical mockers.” These individuals are characterised by their insincerity, deceit, and mockery. They may pretend to be friendly or supportive, but their true intentions are malicious. They may use words or actions to taunt and ridicule David, adding to his distress.

In feasts:The phrase “in feasts” suggests that these hypocritical mockers are not only attacking David in private but also openly, perhaps during public gatherings or celebratory occasions. This could imply that they are spreading false accusations or engaging in slanderous speech, attempting to discredit David in front of others.

Gnashing upon me with their teeth:“Gnashing” refers to grinding or clenching one’s teeth in anger, frustration, or aggression. Here, it symbolises the intense hostility and rage of David’s enemies towards him. Their actions are not only limited to words but also encompass physical threats or acts of violence.

Overall, this verse depicts the depth of David’s suffering and the relentless persecution he faces from his adversaries. It highlights the distress caused by their hypocritical and mocking behaviour, which amplifies his sense of isolation and vulnerability.

From a broader perspective, this verse can also serve as a reminder of the challenges and opposition that believers may face in various forms throughout their lives. It encourages us to seek God’s help and protection in times of trouble and to trust in His justice, knowing that He sees the hearts of all individuals and will bring about righteousness in due time.

It’s essential to study the entire psalm to gain a fuller understanding of David’s prayer, his appeals to God for deliverance, and the ultimate confidence he places in God’s faithfulness.
