Listen to this article

My louers and my friends stand a loofe from my sore: and my kinsmen stand a farre off. Psalms 38:11 (KJV)

Psalm 38 is a lament of David, expressing his deep distress and physical affliction. In these verses David acknowledges that the Lord knows all his desires and is aware of his groaning.

Surrendering to God’s Knowledge:

David begins by acknowledging that God is fully aware of all his desires. By stating, “Lord, all my desire is before thee,” he acknowledges that nothing is hidden from God’s sight. This declaration reflects a posture of surrender to God’s omniscience. It is a recognition that God knows the deepest longings of our hearts, and we can approach Him with honesty and vulnerability.

Seeking Comfort in God’s Awareness:

David continues by acknowledging that his groaning is not hidden from God. Groaning here refers to the expression of David’s pain, anguish, and lamentation. Despite his suffering, David finds solace in the fact that God is fully aware of his distress. This reveals a deep sense of trust in God’s care and understanding. It reminds us that God is not distant or unaware of our struggles but is intimately involved and attentive to our cries for help.

Honest Communication with God:

This verse also highlights the importance of open and honest communication with God. David’s words demonstrate his willingness to pour out his heart before the Lord, expressing his desires and groaning. This exemplifies the practice of bringing our whole selves before God, sharing our joys, sorrows, needs, and concerns. It reminds us that we can approach God with complete transparency, knowing that He hears and understands us.

God’s Compassionate Response:

While this verse focuses on David’s acknowledgement of God’s awareness, the broader context of Psalm 38 reveals God’s compassionate response to his cry for help. Throughout the psalm, David implores God for deliverance, forgiveness, and healing from his physical and spiritual afflictions. By acknowledging that his desires and groaning are before God, David expresses confidence in God’s ability to respond with mercy and deliverance.
