Psalms 38:20

Listen to this article

“They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.”

Context:Psalm 38 is a penitential psalm attributed to David. It reflects the anguish and distress he experienced due to his sin and the resulting physical and emotional turmoil.

Psalm 38:20 (KJV) says: “They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.” This verse highlights a common theme found throughout the Psalms, namely, the psalmist’s struggle with adversaries and those who seek to harm or oppose him.

  • Adversaries: The psalmist acknowledges the presence of adversaries in his life. These individuals are described as rendering evil for good. In other words, they repay his kindness or good deeds with malicious intentions or actions.
  • Following Good: The psalmist asserts that he is committed to pursuing what is good and right. Despite the opposition and adversity he faces, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of righteousness and godliness.

From a broader perspective, this verse can offer us valuable insights and lessons:

  • Expect Opposition:Just as the psalmist encountered adversaries, we too may face opposition when we strive to do what is good and pleasing to God.
  • Remain Faithful:Like the psalmist, we should strive to follow what is good despite the adversity we encounter. Our commitment to righteousness should not waver in the face of opposition.
  • Trust in God’s Justice:While it may seem unfair when others repay our good with evil, we can take comfort in knowing that God is a just and righteous judge.
