Psalms 4:3

Listen to this article

“But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him.”

Context: The Book of Psalms is a collection of songs and prayers that express a wide range of human emotions and experiences. Psalm 4 is attributed to David and is categorized as an evening prayer. It addresses themes such as trust in God, seeking His favor, and finding peace in His presence.

“But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself”: This verse highlights the concept of divine separation. God sets apart the godly for Himself, indicating a special relationship and favour bestowed upon those who seek to live righteously. It emphasises God’s role in choosing and distinguishing His faithful people.

The godly: The term “godly” refers to those who are devout, righteous, and committed to following God’s ways. They are individuals who have chosen to align their lives with God’s will, seeking to live according to His commands and values. God’s people are set apart from the world and called to be holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Divine favour and responsiveness: The psalmist declares that because the Lord has set apart the godly for Himself, He will respond to their prayers. It signifies the close relationship between the godly and God, in which He actively listens and attends to their cries for help. This assurance encourages believers to approach God confidently, knowing that He hears and answers their prayers (1 John 5:14-15).

Application: As believers, we can take comfort in the knowledge that God sets apart the godly for Himself. This means that when we choose to live in obedience to His Word and seek a personal relationship with Him, we become recipients of His divine favour. We have the assurance that God hears our prayers and responds according to His perfect will and timing.

Reflecting on the verse: Consider how you are living a godly life, seeking to honour and obey God in all aspects of your life. Reflect on the times when you have experienced God’s faithfulness and answered prayers. Take encouragement from this verse to continue seeking God’s favour and to confidently bring your requests before Him in prayer.
