Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast vs not off for euer. Psalms 44:23 (KJV)

Psalm 44:23 is attributed to the sons of Korah and belongs to a communal lament that expresses the distress and anguish of the people of Israel in the face of defeat and affliction. The psalm as a whole recounts Israel’s past victories, acknowledging that their success was not due to their own power but because of God’s deliverance, and then turns to describe the present state of defeat and suffering.

In this verse the psalmist cries out to the Lord with vivid, urgent language: “Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.” The plea also includes the request, “Awake, O LORD; and put thou all the nations in derision, and the peoples of the whole earth,” emphasizing a desire that the nations be put to shame. The rhetorical question highlights the psalmist’s perception that God seems inactive, while the subsequent petitions reflect a deep yearning for divine intervention and a confidence that God will not abandon them permanently.

The language of the verse underscores the psalmist’s sense of abandonment and the earnest hope that God will intervene, rescue the community, and restore them. It demonstrates their faith in God’s faithfulness and the belief that God has the power to deliver and rescue them from trouble. This honest expression of emotion reveals the psalmist’s trust in God’s sovereignty and their plea for His help.

When studying this verse it is essential to consider the broader context of Psalm 44. Despite the contrast between earlier triumphs and the current suffering, the psalmist remains steadfast in trust, seeking God’s restoration and deliverance. The psalm reminds believers that even in times of distress and perceived divine silence, they can turn to God in honest prayer, express their deepest emotions, and rely on His enduring presence.

Overall, Psalm 44:23 conveys a heartfelt plea for God’s attention, action, and intervention in a time of distress, expressing the psalmist’s unwavering reliance on God’s enduring faithfulness and the confidence that He hears the cries of His people.
