Listen to this article

“He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.”

Context:Psalm 47 is a hymn of praise and rejoicing in the kingship of God. It celebrates His sovereignty over all nations and His chosen people, Israel. The psalm encourages all people to clap their hands, shout with joy, and sing praises to God.

“He shall choose our inheritance for us”:In this verse, “He” refers to God, who is depicted as the ruler and leader of His people. The term “inheritance” signifies the land that God had promised to the Israelites as their possession. The phrase emphasizes that it is God who determines and assigns the inheritance of His people. It demonstrates God’s authority and control over the destinies of His chosen ones.

“The excellency of Jacob whom he loved”:This phrase highlights the favoured status of Jacob (also known as Israel) among the nations. Jacob was chosen by God to be the forefather of the Israelite nation and was shown special affection. The term “excellency” suggests the preeminence or superiority of Jacob’s position. It conveys the idea that God has elevated Jacob and his descendants to a place of honour and distinction.

Selah:The term “Selah” appears frequently throughout the Book of Psalms. Its precise meaning is uncertain, but it is believed to be a musical or liturgical notation. It likely indicates a pause or interlude, allowing for reflection on the preceding verse or thought.

Overall, Psalm 47:4 affirms God’s sovereignty and His role in choosing the inheritance of His people. It signifies the unique relationship between God and Israel, highlighting their favoured position and the love that God bestows upon them. The verse calls for contemplation and recognition of God’s divine plan and His blessings upon His chosen nation.
