Listen to this article

For strangers are risen vp against me, and oppressors seeke after my soule; they haue not set God before them. Selah. Psalms 54:3 (KJV)

Historical Context: Psalm 54 was written by David during a time when he was being pursued by his enemies, particularly King Saul. David was hiding in the wilderness of Ziph, but the Ziphites betrayed him by revealing his location to Saul. In this context, David expresses his plea for deliverance from his adversaries.

Acknowledging Opposition: The verse begins by acknowledging the presence of adversaries or “strangers” who have risen up against David. These individuals are described as oppressors who are seeking after his soul. It highlights the reality of facing opposition and persecution in life.

The Absence of God: David observes that his enemies have not set God before them. This indicates that his adversaries are acting without the fear or reverence of God. They are driven by their own motives and lack an understanding of God’s sovereignty. Their actions reflect a disregard for righteousness and justice.

Selah: The term “Selah” is found throughout the book of Psalms and serves as a musical or liturgical notation. It indicates a pause or break, encouraging the reader to reflect on the preceding verses and meditate on their significance. In this case, it provides an opportunity for David and the readers to contemplate the reality of the situation and seek God’s guidance.

Trusting God: While David acknowledges the presence of his enemies, he doesn’t lose hope. Throughout the psalm, he expresses his trust in God’s deliverance and faithfulness. The remainder of Psalm 54 emphasizes David’s confidence in God’s protection and his gratitude for God’s help.

Overall, Psalm 54:3 highlights the reality of opposition and persecution while emphasizing the importance of trusting in God’s presence and seeking His guidance in such situations.
