Psalms 59:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:25

Deliuer mee from the workers of iniquitie, and saue me from bloodie men. Psalms 59:2 (KJV)

Psalm 59:2 (KJV) reads: “Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.”

Historical Context:

Psalm 59 is attributed to King David and was composed while he was fleeing from King Saul and his hostile troops. Saul’s jealousy and anger drove him to pursue David with the intent to kill him. In this desperate situation David cries out to God for protection, trusting in divine deliverance.

Understanding the Verse:

(a) “Deliver me from the workers of iniquity”: David petitions God to rescue him from those who practice wickedness and actively oppose God’s ways. These workers of iniquity symbolize the forces that seek to harm the righteous.

(b) “Save me from bloody men”: David acknowledges the danger posed by violent men who shed blood. He seeks God’s intervention against these ruthless aggressors.

Application to Our Lives:

(a) Recognizing evil influences: The world presents many forms of evil, whether through the actions of others or personal temptations. This verse calls believers to be discerning of wickedness that surrounds them.

(b) Seeking deliverance from God: Just as David turned to the Lord in crisis, we are encouraged to bring our fears, anxieties, and threats before God, trusting Him as our refuge and shield.

(c) Trusting in God’s salvation: David’s confidence in God’s ability to save should inspire our own trust that He can rescue us from sin’s snares and the enemy’s attacks. God remains the ultimate source of salvation and deliverance.

(d) Praying for our enemies: While David asks for protection from the wicked, Scripture also calls us to love our enemies and pray for their transformation (Matthew 5:44). We can intercede for those who persecute us, seeking both our safety and their redemption.

Additional Scriptures:

(a) Psalm 27:1 (KJV): “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

(b) Psalm 5:11 (KJV): “But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.”

(c) Romans 12:21 (KJV): “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
