Psalms 59:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:25

They runne and prepare themselues without my fault: awake to helpe me, and behold. Psalms 59:4 (KJV)

Psalm 59:4 (KJV) states: “They prepare themselves for the fight: they run and gather themselves together without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.” Psalm 59:4 (KJV) also states: “They have made ready their hearts to devour me.”

Context: Psalm 59 was written by King David, and it falls into the category of lament or complaint psalms. David composed this psalm during a time when King Saul sent messengers to watch David’s house in order to kill him. David sought refuge and deliverance from his enemies, crying out to God for help.

Understanding the Verse: In the phrase “They prepare themselves for the fight: they run and gather themselves together without my fault,” David expresses his innocence. He acknowledges that his adversaries, represented by Saul and his followers, pursue and prepare themselves for his destruction even though he has done nothing wrong to warrant such animosity. The statement “They have made ready their hearts to devour me” reinforces this sense of unjust attack, showing that David is the victim of hostile intent.

Application:

a. Innocence in the face of opposition: David’s words reflect the reality that sometimes people may face unjust criticism, opposition, or even persecution, despite their innocence. As believers, we may encounter situations where we are falsely accused or mistreated. In such circumstances, it is essential to trust in God’s justice, knowing that He sees our hearts and will ultimately bring about justice.

b. Calling on God for help: David’s plea to God is a reminder that we can always turn to Him in times of trouble. When facing challenges, we should follow David’s example and call upon God, knowing that He is attentive to our prayers. God invites us to cast our burdens upon Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

c. Trusting in God’s deliverance: As we pray for help, we must also trust in God’s ability to rescue us from our adversaries. Like David, we can have confidence that God will deliver us from our enemies and bring about a favorable outcome. Psalm 34:17 declares, “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”

d. Maintaining an attitude of dependence: David’s plea to God reflects his understanding of his need for divine intervention. It is a reminder that we are dependent on God for help in all aspects of our lives. Cultivating a posture of dependence on God helps us recognize that He is our ultimate source of strength and deliverance.
