Psalms 62:12

Listen to this article

“Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.”

Context:Psalms 62 is a psalm of David that expresses his confidence and trust in God. In the earlier verses, David speaks of finding rest and refuge in God alone, acknowledging Him as his rock, salvation, and fortress. In verse 12, David emphasizes two key aspects of God’s character: His mercy and His justice.

The Lord’s Mercy:The verse begins by acknowledging that mercy belongs to the Lord. Mercy refers to God’s compassion, kindness, and willingness to pardon and forgive. It is an essential attribute of God’s nature. David recognizes that the Lord is the source of mercy, and it is within His power to extend it to those who seek Him. This highlights God’s willingness to show compassion and grace to His people.

God’s Just Recompense:The latter part of the verse states that God “renderest to every man according to his work.” This phrase highlights the concept of divine justice. God is righteous and fair, and He judges each person according to their actions and deeds. It implies that there will be consequences for one’s actions, and God will reward or punish accordingly. This concept is consistent throughout the Bible, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility and accountability before God.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s mercy:David’s acknowledgment of God’s mercy encourages us to place our trust in Him. We can rely on His compassion and forgiveness when we seek Him genuinely, acknowledging our need for His grace. This reminds us of the New Testament teachings on God’s abundant mercy through Jesus Christ.
  • Accountability and responsibility:The verse also serves as a reminder of the principle of reaping what we sow. It emphasizes that our actions have consequences. We should strive to live according to God’s commands, knowing that our choices and deeds matter and will ultimately be taken into account.
  • Seeking God’s justice:Recognizing that God is just should inspire us to pursue justice in our own lives. We should strive to treat others fairly and seek righteousness in our actions, knowing that God is the ultimate judge.
  • Gratitude for God’s character:Finally, this verse encourages us to reflect on and express gratitude for the multifaceted character of God. He is both merciful and just, and we can find comfort and security in His nature.

In conclusion, Psalms 62:12 reminds us of God’s mercy and justice. It invites us to trust in His compassion while also recognizing that He holds us accountable for our actions. This verse encourages us to live in a manner that aligns with God’s righteousness and to find solace in His character.
