The hil of God is as the hill of Bashan, an high hill as the hill of Bashan. Psalms 68:15 (KJV)

The hill of God

is as the hill of Bashan; an high hill

as the hill of Bashan.

Psalms 68: 15 (KJV)

Psalm 68 is a song of praise and victory that celebrates God’s deliverance of Israel and His sovereign rule over all creation. The psalmist extols the power and majesty of God, emphasizing His care for the oppressed and His defeat of His enemies. In the Hebrew poetic tradition, mountains and hills often carry symbolic significance; they can represent strength, stability, or the dwelling place of God.

The reference to the “hill of Bashan” points to the region east of the Jordan River that was known for its fertile land and prominent, lofty hills. By comparing the hill of God to the hill of Bashan, the psalmist highlights the greatness and splendor of God’s dwelling place. The imagery suggests that God’s abode is exalted and majestic, superior to any earthly mountain, and it signifies the unrivaled authority and power of God over the whole earth.

Within the broader context of Psalm 68, the theme of God’s triumph and deliverance is prominent. The likening of God’s hill to the high hill of Bashan affirms that God is victorious over all challenges and enemies. It reassures believers that God is present and able to provide refuge and protection, just as a high hill offers natural defense to those who dwell upon it.

Christians may also view this verse in light of the New Testament. In the person of Jesus Christ, the ultimate dwelling place of God, the imagery finds its fulfillment. Jesus is presented as the true hill of God, the highest peak of divine revelation and salvation. Through His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection, He overcame sin, death, and the powers of darkness, establishing victory for all time.

Psalm 68:15 therefore encourages believers to recognize and worship the greatness of God. It reminds us that He is our refuge, a mighty fortress, and a source of strength in times of trouble. The verse also invites us to seek a deeper understanding of Jesus Christ, who embodies the hill of God, and to place our trust in Him for deliverance and salvation. In doing so, we acknowledge God’s sovereignty, find security in His presence, and rejoice in His ultimate victory over all forces that oppose Him.
