“God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”

Psalm 7:11 (KJV): “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”

Historical Background: The book of Psalms, traditionally attributed to King David, is a collection of poetic songs and prayers that express a range of emotions and experiences. Psalm 7 is a lament of David, where he cries out to God for deliverance from his enemies. Verse 11 is a declaration about God’s character and His attitude towards the righteous and the wicked.

God as a Righteous Judge: The verse begins by stating, “God judgeth the righteous.” This emphasizes that God is a just and righteous Judge. He evaluates the actions and motives of people, discerning between the righteous and the wicked. This attribute assures the righteous that God sees their actions and will ultimately vindicate them.

God’s Anger toward the Wicked: The second part of the verse declares, “God is angry with the wicked every day.” This shows that God’s righteous anger is directed towards the wicked continuously. It highlights God’s intolerance towards evil and His desire for righteousness. This attribute assures the righteous that God is aware of the wickedness around them and will ultimately hold the wicked accountable for their actions.

Application for Believers: a. Encouragement for the Righteous: The righteous can find solace and encouragement in knowing that God sees and evaluates their actions. Even when facing opposition or persecution, they can trust that God is their ultimate Judge and will vindicate them in due time.

b. Warning for the Wicked: The verse serves as a warning to the wicked that God’s anger is directed towards them. It reminds them that their actions and lifestyles have consequences. It calls them to repentance and to turn away from their wicked ways.

God’s Justice and Mercy: While this verse emphasizes God’s anger towards the wicked, it is important to note that God is also a God of mercy and forgiveness. The Bible teaches that through Jesus Christ, God offers salvation and forgiveness to all who repent and believe in Him. God’s justice and anger towards sin are perfectly balanced with His love and desire to reconcile humanity to Himself.
