Psalms 7:4

If I haue rewarded euill vnto him that was at peace with me: (yea I haue deliuered him that without cause is mine enemie.) Psalms 7:4 (KJV)

Psalm 7 is attributed to King David and is presented as a prayer for deliverance from hostile forces. In verse 4 David offers a conditional declaration of his innocence: he states that if he had repaid evil to someone who was at peace with him, or if he had delivered an innocent person into the hands of an enemy without cause, then he would deserve divine judgment. The language underscores his confidence that he has acted righteously and that any accusation against him is unfounded. This verse therefore functions as a solemn appeal to God’s justice, inviting the Almighty to examine David’s conduct and to vindicate him if he is indeed blameless.

For contemporary believers, the passage points to a broader principle of integrity before God. It reminds us that God knows the motives of the heart and will hold us accountable for unjust actions toward those who are peaceful with us or for colluding with adversaries without justification. The text also prepares the way for a Christ‑centered application. Jesus, though sinless, endured false accusations, wrongful treatment, and ultimately a sacrificial death. His response was marked by forgiveness and love toward those who persecuted Him, embodying the highest standard of responding to hostility.

The study therefore encourages believers to examine their own lives for any hidden resentment or unjust retaliation. It calls us to emulate Christ’s example by extending forgiveness, seeking reconciliation, and trusting that God’s righteous judgment will prevail. When faced with conflict, we are invited to rest in the assurance that God sees all, and that true vindication comes not through personal vengeance but through faithful obedience and love toward even our enemies.
