Psalms 7:6

Listen to this article

“Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.”

Context of the Psalm: Psalm 7 is attributed to David and is titled “A Shiggaion of David.” Shiggaion is a term whose meaning is uncertain, but it is likely connected to a musical or poetic form. This psalm is a cry for help and deliverance from enemies who are pursuing David and making false accusations against him. David seeks God’s righteous judgment in his situation.

Addressing God’s Anger: In Psalm 7:6, David implores the Lord to arise in His anger. This is not a request for God to act out of uncontrolled wrath but a plea for divine intervention against David’s enemies who are displaying rage against him. It is a recognition that God is the ultimate judge who will execute justice against those who oppose His righteous purposes.

Trusting in God’s Judgment: David appeals to God to “awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.” David understands that God has established a standard of justice and judgment. He places his trust in God’s ability to discern the truth and administer justice. David seeks vindication through God’s righteous judgment rather than seeking personal revenge or taking matters into his own hands.

Application for Believers: a. Trusting God’s Timing: Like David, we may face adversaries, false accusations, or unjust treatment. In such situations, we can learn from David’s example of patiently waiting for God’s timing. We trust that God, who is just, will eventually bring about justice and vindication.

b. Seeking Divine Intervention: When facing opposition or adversity, we should turn to God in prayer and seek His intervention. Just as David implored God to arise and lift Himself up, we can bring our concerns and struggles before God, knowing that He is the one who can bring deliverance and justice.

c. Leaving Judgment to God: Instead of seeking revenge or taking matters into our own hands, we should trust in God’s judgment. He is the ultimate arbiter of justice, and we can find solace in knowing that He will right the wrongs in His own way and timing.

d. Embracing God’s Sovereignty: Recognizing God’s sovereignty helps us maintain a proper perspective when facing opposition. God sees and knows all things, and His justice will ultimately prevail. Trusting in His sovereignty enables us to have peace and confidence, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, Psalm 7:6 portrays David’s plea for God’s intervention and righteous judgment against his enemies. It teaches us to trust in God’s timing, seek divine intervention, leave judgment to God, and embrace His sovereignty in our own lives.
