Psalms 71:15

My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

Context

Psalm 71 is a prayer of an older believer who has trusted God from youth and now faces trouble and the weakness of old age. The psalmist, traditionally David, asks for deliverance and protection, yet in this verse he turns from asking to promising praise. His words show a lifelong habit of depending on God, not only in hard times but every day.

Meaning

“My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day” means the psalmist will keep speaking about God’s faithful character and His saving acts. He does not plan to praise occasionally; “all the day” points to a constant, persistent witness. The second part, “for I know not the numbers thereof,” admits that God’s righteousness and salvation are too many to count. Human words can never exhaust the reality of what God has done.

In the surrounding verses, the psalmist promises to hope continually and praise more and more (Psalm 71:14), and later he declares God’s strength to the next generation (Psalm 71:18).
