Psalms 78:19
Yea, they spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wildernes? Psalms 78:19 (KJV)
Psalm 78 is a historical psalm written by Asaph, one of the chief musicians in the time of King David. The psalm recounts the history of the Israelites and their relationship with God, highlighting both their faithfulness and their rebelliousness.
Verse 19 focuses on a particular incident during the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after they were delivered from Egypt. The people of Israel, in their ingratitude and lack of trust in God’s provision, began to speak against Him. Their words are captured in the lament, “For they turned back, and tempted God, and said, ‘Is it not enough that thou hast wrought wonders for us? what else is left that we may see?’”
This verse reveals the spiritual state of the Israelites at that moment. Despite witnessing numerous miracles and experiencing God’s mighty deliverance from slavery, they doubted His ability to provide for their needs in the desert. Their focus shifted from recalling past acts—such as the plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, and the manna that fell from heaven—to their immediate hardships.
The Israelites’ lack of faith and grumbling against God were recurring themes throughout their journey in the wilderness. Their complaints demonstrated a failure to recognise God’s faithfulness and power. Instead of trusting in His promises and provision, they focused on their immediate circumstances and allowed doubt to creep into their hearts.
This verse serves as a reminder for us today. It highlights the importance of trust and faith in God’s provision, even in the midst of challenging situations. God has proven Himself faithful time and time again throughout history, and He remains the same today. When we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, we should remember God’s faithfulness and trust that He can indeed “furnish a table in the wilderness.”
As believers, we are called to guard against doubting God’s ability to provide for us. Rather than complaining and questioning His provision, we should trust in His sovereignty and rely on His promises. Just as God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness, He will also provide for our needs according to His perfect plan.
In conclusion, Psalm 78:19 reminds us of the Israelites’ lack of faith and their tendency to speak against God’s provision. It serves as a lesson for us to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in challenging circumstances, and to avoid doubting His ability to provide for us. May we learn from their example and cultivate unwavering faith in our faithful God.
