Psalms 78:27
He rained flesh also vpon them as dust: and feathered soules like as the sand of the sea. Psalms 78:27 (KJV)
Psalm 78 is a historical psalm attributed to Asaph. It recounts the history of Israel from the deliverance out of Egypt through the establishment of David as king. The psalm stresses the importance of remembering God’s faithfulness and the consequences that follow Israel’s disobedience.
In verse 27 the psalmist describes one of God’s miraculous provisions for the Israelites in the wilderness. The language speaks of God “raining flesh also upon them as dust” and of “great abundance of the flesh … as the sand of the sea,” indicating that He sent a massive supply of quail to satisfy their hunger. This vivid picture underscores the plentiful nature of God’s provision.
The passage also highlights God’s sovereignty and power over creation. The same God who created all things is able to provide for His people in extraordinary ways—just as He sent manna from heaven, He also sent an abundance of quail. This demonstrates that the Creator can meet the needs of His people through the very elements of the natural world.
The provision of quail carries spiritual lessons for today’s believers. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness, His ability to meet our needs, and His desire to provide for His people. The psalm also warns that the Israelites soon forgot this provision and lusted for more, leading to judgment, a cautionary reminder to guard against ingratitude.
Reflecting on this verse should prompt gratitude for God’s provision in our own lives. It encourages us to trust in His faithfulness and to remember that He is able to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
