Listen to this article

“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”

1. Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic and musical compositions written by various authors. Psalm 78 is attributed to Asaph, one of David’s chief musicians. It is a historical psalm that recounts the faithfulness of God throughout Israel’s history and emphasizes the importance of passing on God’s teachings and acts to future generations.

2. “We will not hide them from their children”: This verse begins with a collective commitment to not conceal or withhold the knowledge of God’s mighty acts and teachings from the next generation. It highlights the responsibility of the current generation to ensure that the knowledge and experiences of God’s faithfulness are passed down to their children.

3. “Shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord”: The primary purpose of this commitment is to declare and make known the praises of the Lord to the future generation. It involves sharing testimonies, stories, and experiences of God’s goodness, mercy, and deliverance so that the next generation can understand and appreciate the character and nature of God.

4. “And his strength”: Along with the praises of the Lord, the current generation is responsible for conveying the message of God’s strength. This refers to His power, might, and ability to accomplish mighty works on behalf of His people. It reminds the future generation of God’s unlimited strength and encourages them to trust in Him.

5. “And his wonderful works that he hath done”: The commitment also includes recounting the wonderful works that God has performed throughout history. This encompasses His miracles, interventions, providence, and acts of deliverance on behalf of His people. Sharing these accounts inspires faith and encourages the next generation to rely on God’s faithfulness in their own lives.
