Psalms 79:10
“Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.”
Context:The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic prayers and songs, often attributed to King David. Psalm 79 is a lament written in response to the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by the Babylonians. The psalmist expresses anguish over the desolation of God’s holy city and calls upon God for deliverance and justice.
Acknowledging the heathen:The verse begins with the question, “Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God?” The psalmist is concerned about the reputation of God among the nations. The heathen, or the nations who don’t acknowledge or worship the true God, are questioning the power and existence of Israel’s God. The psalmist recognizes this and appeals to God for His intervention.
Making God known among the heathen:The psalmist continues, “Let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.” The psalmist prays that God would reveal Himself to the nations by avenging the shedding of blood of His servants. This plea is not merely for revenge but rather for God’s justice to be displayed so that the heathen would recognize the power and sovereignty of Israel’s God.
God’s justice and reputation:The psalmist’s concern is not only for the vindication of God’s people but also for the honor of God’s name. When God demonstrates His justice and intervenes on behalf of His people, the heathen will witness it and recognize the reality and power of the one true God.
Application for believers:While this verse has a specific historical context, there are several lessons we can draw from it as believers today. It reminds us of the importance of living in such a way that God’s name is honoured among the nations. Our actions and conduct should reflect His character, and we should seek justice and righteousness in our interactions with others. Additionally, this verse encourages us to pray for God’s justice and deliverance, not only for ourselves but for the sake of His reputation among those who do not yet know Him.
