Psalms 82:3

Defend the poore and fatherlesse: doe iustice to the afflicted and needie. Psalms 82:3 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 82 is a psalm of Asaph, who served as a worship leader during the time of King David. In this psalm Asaph addresses the injustice and corruption that existed among the rulers and judges of Israel.

Divine Council: In the preceding verses Asaph portrays God presiding over a council—often called “gods” or “sons of God”—of judges appointed to rule over the nations and administer justice. These judges failed in their duties, leading to the suffering and oppression of the weak and vulnerable.

Defend the poor and fatherless: The psalmist calls these judges to fulfill their responsibilities by defending the cause of the poor and fatherless, who were among the most vulnerable members of society, lacking resources and protection. God’s appointed leaders were expected to use their authority to ensure justice and provide for their needs.

Doing justice to the afflicted and needy: In addition, the judges were commanded to do justice to the afflicted and needy, standing up for those who were oppressed, marginalized, or mistreated. This implies actively seeking fairness, ensuring equitable treatment, and addressing the needs of those who were suffering.

Application for believers: Though the verse specifically addresses human judges, it carries a broader application for believers today. As followers of God we are called to reflect His character and engage in acts of justice and compassion. We are encouraged to defend the cause of the poor, orphaned, and oppressed, standing up for those who cannot defend themselves. This involves addressing social, economic, and systemic issues that perpetuate injustice and working toward positive change in our communities.

Jesus as the ultimate example: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, exemplified these principles during His earthly ministry. He consistently stood with the marginalized, demonstrated compassion to the needy, and challenged oppressive systems of His time. Believers are called to follow His footsteps and extend His love and justice to the world around us.
