Psalms 85:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.”

1. Context:Psalm 85 is attributed to the sons of Korah and is a psalm of repentance and restoration. It begins with a reflection on God’s past favour and forgiveness, and then expresses a longing for God’s restoration and renewal in the present.

2. Recognition of the Need for God’s Intervention:The psalmist begins by acknowledging the need for God to intervene. The phrase “Turn us, O God of our salvation” indicates a plea for God to restore His people and bring them back into a right relationship with Him. It recognises that true salvation and deliverance come from God alone.

3. Acknowledgment of God’s Anger:The psalmist also acknowledges that God’s people have experienced His anger. This refers to the consequences of their disobedience and sin, which have led to a breakdown in their relationship with God. The psalmist desires for God’s anger to cease, signifying a desire for forgiveness and reconciliation.

4. Repentance and Seeking God’s Favour:By praying for God to turn them and cease His anger, the psalmist demonstrates a repentant heart. They recognise their need for God’s mercy and forgiveness, and they desire to experience His favour once again. It is an appeal for restoration and renewed fellowship with God.
